Career Entry Level Competencies

I	AWARENESS	Full development of the competency requires experience in daily work with moderate direction and additional instruction.
II	SEMI-PRODUCTIVE	Full development of the competency requires experience in daily work with moderate direction.
III	PRODUCTIVE	Full development of the competency requires only the usual orientation needed by any new employee.

Professionalism:

1.	III	Communicates effectively with patients and hospital personnel. This includes written and verbal communication.
2.	III	Demonstrates cooperation, kindness, and mutual respect to co-workers and patients.
3.	III	Recognizes, respects, and honors the confidentiality of patient information at all times.
4.	III	Consistently provides honesty, truthfulness, and fairness in the work setting and when dealing with patients.
5.	III	Practices ethical standards in all respects when working in healthcare.
6.	III	Maintains professional image and conduct in interactions with other health care professionals, patients, and the public.
7.	III	Differentiates the role of the clinical laboratory scientist and other health care team members in providing quality patient care.
8.	II	Recognizes the need for continuing education in the profession, enrolls in CE opportunities, and encourages co-workers.
9.	III	Advocates positive public relations with patients and the public when the opportunity presents itself.

Technical:

1.	III	Demonstrates correct skills in specimen collection, handling, and preservation.
2.	III	Follows patient identification requirements at all times.
3.	III	Establishes criteria and a response policy for when unacceptable specimens are collected and a recollection must be initiated.
4.	III	Critiques quality of specimens for the analysis requested.
5.	III	Respects and follows appropriate safety procedures.
6.	II	Prioritizes and organizes workload to provide appropriate patient care and efficiency.
7.	II	Maintains flexibility and adaptability to new procedures.
8.	III	Assumes responsibility for desk assignment at all times, including emergency situations.
9.	III	Employs an understanding of the principles and techniques of clinical laboratory testing to recognize problems, seek out reasons why, and identify an appropriate response or correction..
10.	III	Operates and Calibrates instrumentation using appropriate materials while following established protocol.
11.	II	Differentiates and evaluates the validity of a test result with respect to reference intervals, quality control, instrument performance, correlation with other test results, and clinical significance to the patient.
12.	II	Establishes reference intervals appropriate for the situation and population tested.
13.	II	Prepares and updates laboratory procedures following NCCLS standards.
14.	II	Selects and establishes test methods utilizing appropriate protocols, reagents, equipment, and instruments essential to the specifications of the analysis.
15.	III	Performs laboratory testing with accuracy and precision in a timely manner while maintaining workflow.
16.	II	Instructs other employees or students on how to collect blood or perform a laboratory analysis.
17.	II	Evaluates a new method versus previous protocol.
18.	II	Monitors compliance of regulations from external organizations such as AABB.
19.	II	Participates in ordering laboratory supplies within an accurate and timely manner.
20.	III	Records and reports test results according to established protocol.
21.	II	Notifies the appropriate internal and external units when dealing with laboratory results involving a communicable disease.
22.	III	Assumes responsibility for verifying laboratory results, taking into consideration possible technical errors.
23.	II	Comprehends the quality assurance concepts and utilizes them effectively.
24.	II	Utilizes laboratory information systems effectively.
25.	II	Demonstrates basic knowledge of management/supervisory functions.
